The Equestrian Team Isn't Horsing Around
By Ellery Schiller '21
The Bennington Equestrian Team is a family of Bennington students, ruled by our amazing coach Tara, who show at different equitation events in the area. This term, we have gone to shows at Smith and Mount Holyoke, and will be showing at one hosted by Hampshire next week. These shows are places to demonstrate your riding skills, make new friends with people at other colleges, and of course spend some time with the horses. The team trains at Taraden (Tara’s stables) in North Bennington with some truly incredible horses, my personal fave being DaVinci because he’s a speedy boy!
Practice, practice, practice is the key to improving on horseback, so team members are able to come and ride whenever they can, and that means all the more time to spend with Duke, and Gus, and DaVinci (and Says Who, and Tully, and Pepper).
Everyone on the team has a different amount of knowledge and experience in riding, so don’t let your lack of know-how scare you from joining. I didn’t know what diagonals were when I joined and they’re still what I practice every day in the ring, along with stirrup-less posting, cantering, and two-pointing (aka the first step in learning to jump).
